VELS Domains

Student progress is reported against the domains of the Victorian Essential Learning Standards (VELS), as developed by the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development. Whilst many of the domain titles are clear, these are some you may like further clarification of:
- Interpersonal Development - assesses students’ ability to initiate, maintain and manage positive social relationships with a range of people in a range of contexts.
- Personal Learning - assesses students’ skills in planning, monitoring and revising their work, and reflecting on and modifying their learning practices.
- Civics and Citizenship - assesses students’ understanding of their role in the community and decision making processes in Australia.
- The Humanities - assesses students’ understandings about their immediate and local community. They are introduced to the history and geography of their country and the diversity of culture.
- Mathematics (Structure) - assesses students’ knowledge of mathematical laws and rules.
- Mathematics (Working Mathematically) - assesses students’ problem solving and mathematical strategies.
- Thinking - assesses students’ critical and creative thinking skills, and their ability reflect on what they know and develop awareness that there is more to know.
- Communication - assesses students’ ability to present information, ideas and opinions in a range of forms, including verbal, written, graphic, multimedia and performance.
- Design, Creativity and Technology - assesses students’ ability to manage and manipulate materials and resources such as paper, cardboard, fabrics, using a range of tools and equipment such as scissors, brushes, spoons and knives to make products or systems.
When reading this section of the report, remember to ‘Celebrate the C’! ‘C’ highlights that your child is working at the expected level and is on track with his or her learning.
